Success appears to be a relative concept. Obviously, success means something different to each person, or at least people measure success in different terms. At the top of the list, necessarily, is usually money. I use the word ‘necessarily’ because money is vital to living well in our world. More about money in a bit, but let’s move on for the moment. Most would agree that success is essential in love, faith, relationships, parenting, education, and so many more areas of human life. The success question is one that has been studied perhaps since the very existence of the word itself, and continues to be explored today and tomorrow. Is there an exact formula for success? Can anyone (or most “able” people) attain success? Certainly there are those who will argue that personal success is as different as each individual and therefore there is no one simple formula or system to achieve it. I emphatically disagree! I contend that the actual measure of success is a function of each individual’s desires, but the way to go about attaining and maintaining lifetime success is the same for everyone. There definitely is a formula for lifetime success! Only the actual measure of success is relative.

So let’s look at money and success for a moment. I had an uncle who was a wealthy civil rights lawyer. I recall him saying that money is only something you need in case you don’t die tomorrow…or something close to those words. The concept was that money was not his central cause or motive. If you, my reader, are centrally motivated by money, I feel sorry for you because I believe you are missing the boat. Further, you are very likely never to have enough money to be satisfied. The lesson my uncle taught by his words was this: doing what you love to do – and doing it very well – is a better measure of success than having lots of money. In fact, very many of those who have gone from little money to abundant money are aware that money is a byproduct of doing what they love and doing it well. A long-term, well-adjusted, well-rounded successful person enjoys abundance across the board in their lifetime…and chances are good that money is not or was not their central motive. In my mind, the most important reason for having money is to own my own time; money buys freedom and an array of choices not otherwise available. Money does not equal success, but success produces money (or better: abundance).

Of course I am aware that I am not the only one to profess that there is a definite formula or system for success. Thousands of “success gurus” have built careers on teaching success (in one or more aspects), and thousands more companies and individuals are concerned with building success (albeit mostly in business and financial pursuits). Success is what everyone wants and the advice on achieving success is endless. I have been studying the components of success (in all areas of life, not just career and money) for over 20 years. Amongst the first famous people to explore success concepts was Norman Vincent Peale. From there, the list is seemingly infinite. Much of what is known, taught, and practiced is excellent and effective! BUT, I have been able to assemble the best of this body of knowledge, and condense it into 6 clearly defined steps that absolutely ensure lifetime success.

That is a huge assertion…I know, I know, I know. But I would not make such a claim unless I believed I could deliver the goods! I have written an e-book called: “Lifetime Success in 6 Simple Steps” (see Resource Box below). Please take a look!

So what are these 6 steps to lifetime success? Well, I’ll make you a deal: I’ll tell you about three of them, but you’ll have to read my e-book to learn all six! Besides, this short article is not enough to disclose all six steps.

Step One is “Motivation”. Motivation is the footings of the foundation for building success. In short, Motivation is the “why” answer. Motivation – our actual motives – is why we desire success (in any given area of our life). It takes real honest work – a demonstrated effort – to discover our real and true motives for our desires. Very often what we believe to be our motives, are not the real root of our desires. The foundation for success stands upon the footings of our motives and directly determines the strength of not only our resolve to achieve, but also the actual result, good or bad. The best motives or motivation is/are steeped in goodness, caring, and honesty, both for and about our planet and our fellow humankind. True and lasting success belongs to those with pure motivation. My e-book helps explore this in greater detail, of course.

Step Three is “Goal Setting”. Volumes are written on goal setting and virtually everyone agrees that strong goals are key to success. Not everyone, however, agrees about the content of goals, how they are best constructed, and the method of reaching them. “Lifetime Success in 6 Simple Steps” discusses a goal setting “workshop” that is done over a period of days and creates immediate, short term, intermediate, and long term goals. As with Step One (Motivation), extreme scrutiny and care must be practiced in goal setting if lifetime success is to be realized.

Step Six is “Flexibility”. Flexibility is the roof over the building of lifetime success and shelters it from failure. In fact, Flexibility effectively eliminates failure from lifetime success! Flexibility allows for the human element – imperfection – and revision of any or all parts of our success plan. Flexibility allows us to give ourselves a break, get back on track, and adjust to a more realistic lifetime success plan.

In closing, I would like to add two quotes from two very successful men, both having the first name Albert. “Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value” (Albert Einstein). “Success is not the key to happiness. For example, if you want to be a financially successful business person, and you are handling your customers with excellence you will naturally be more responsive to your customer or client needs.

This breeds loyalty among your client and customer base. When people want to work with you, and are willing to seek you out, you will find that financial growth and prosperity are almost effortless. You do your job with excellence and you are rewarded for it in the form of more business.

If you want to be an excellent parent, you will choose to commit yourself to spending quality time with your children. And you will also commit to teaching your children to act with excellence too.

If you want to become financially independent you will commit to becoming debt free and go from being a debtor to being an investor. You can only achieve lasting financial independence when you make a commitment to handle your finances with excellence.

The little decisions and choices we make every day will determine how far we get in life. Make a decision to live with excellence and the success will naturally follow. ***

Success Principle #2 – Embrace The Facts Of Reality

If there are things that you are not happy about in your life, do not try to hide these from yourself by engaging in mindless distractions such as smoking, drinking, over-eating or watching television. Neither should you blatantly ignore problems by pretending that they do not exist.

Instead, be honest enough to deliberately embrace the facts of reality at all times. No matter how ugly or painful the facts of reality may be, you need to look at them face on so that, in due course, you can deal with them effectively.

Success Principle #3 – Accept Responsibility For Your Own Life

Some people are in the habit of making excuses for the negative aspects of their lives, and often look to blame something or someone outside of themselves for their situation. The problem with taking this approach to life is that, as well as shifting responsibility outside yourself, it also shifts the power to improve the situation outside yourself, leaving you feeling powerless and victimised.

If you are overweight, you should accept that this is nobody’s fault but your own. If you are in debt, you should accept that you allowed yourself to get into debt. And if you are facing any other preventable problem in your life, you should accept that you are responsible for the existence of that problem, either directly or indirectly. The only way that can have total power over your life is to accept total responsibility for your own life.

Success Principle #4 – Identify Rational Solutions To Problems

Do not think, as many do, that your problems will somehow disappear of their own volition, or that some kind benefactor will show up and bail you out. Instead, live with the attitude that you are completely on your own, and that you must set about finding rational solutions to them for yourself.

Identifying rational solutions to problems is often a lot easier when one has had the courage to face them head-on. The rational solution to some problems is actually quite obvious. For example, the solution to being overweight is to exercise regularly and to consume only those foods which are low in both refined sugars and fats. And a rational solution to financial challenges is to learn how to make more money.

Finding rational solutions to more complicated problems will involve more time and effort, but they can be found all the same. Simply adopt the principle of identifying rational solutions to problems rather than expecting problems to disappear of their own volition. Remember the key nugget of this principle: you must live with the attitude that you are completely on your own, and that if you don’t solve the problem, nobody else will.

Success Principle #5 – Commit Yourself To Moving Forward

Far too many people solve a short term problem, only to go back to previous patterns of living that cause the same problem to occur again in the future. For example, people often get into debt, work hard so that they can get out of debt, only to then revert to lavish spending patterns which cause them to create more personal debt further down the line.

If you want to achieve your true potential then you cannot allow yourself to fall into this trap. Instead, having identified rational solutions to your problems, commit yourself to moving forward by taking appropriate action on a daily basis.

For example, if you have identified that you need to exercise regularly and eat a lot more carefully in order to lose weight, you should commit yourself to doing these things until your target weight is achieved. You should then continue to exercise and eat these healthier foods so that your ideal weight is maintained.

By adhering to these five Success Principles in the manner described, you will rid yourself of the muddy, pessimistic thinking that plagues most of society and move on to develop a clear, rational and optimistic mindset that pulls you forward toward a life of fulfilment. Practice using them consistently from this day forward and your ability to dominate your life will improve at a rapid rate.

An artist doesn’t find a beautiful statue; he or she sculpts it from shapeless stone. A musician doesn’t find a beautiful melody; he or she composes it from the eight note scale.

We are all born with an intellect and it is up to each individual to either use it or let it stagnate. We are all given a body and it is up to each individual to either keep it fit or let it deteriorate. We are all given 365 days in a year and it is up to each individual to either use them or waste them. Every person has a choice in life; to either succeed or fail. The choice is up to each individual, but the one thing that no one can do, is succeed without effort.

The world is full of people who just go through the motions. People who do little more than meet their basic obligations. They are the people who work from nine to five and never miss a coffee break. They arrive right at 9:00a.m and have their desks clear five minutes before 5:00p.m.

Most of these nine to fivers are good and decent people. They’re pleasant, interesting, and up on the latest movies. They’re never too busy to talk about last night’s ball game or the latest trend in fashions. They do their job and meet their obligations.

On the other hand these nine to fivers never study or read outside of their job description. They never come up with a new idea. They never raise questions or try to improve accepted company procedure, nor do they try to initiate change. They are generally satisfied with their jobs and put in just enough effort to earn their paychecks.

These are the people who make it easy for anyone who really wants to succeed in business to do so. Success in business is no secret. Unless you’re the son or daughter of successful entrepreneur, success is a matter of wanting to succeed, wanting to put in the extra hours, to concentrate fully, to challenge your mind and your imagination.

It comes down to commitment, persistence, and gaining the necessary knowledge you need to succeed. You must believe in your abilities, because if you want success badly enough and are prepared to work hard for it, you will achieve it.

Unfortunately, many people believe that they cannot succeed because they’re not educated, or smart enough. This is what separates the successful from the unsuccessful people. Successful people refuse to accept these self-limiting beliefs. They don’t measure themselves against other people. They evaluate their own potential not the potential of others. Success comes to them because they fix their minds on it and work hard to achieve it.

In the business world, the difference between winners and losers is often very small. For as example the salesperson who makes $100,000 a year is not twice as good as the salesperson who makes $50,000. The salesperson who makes $100,000 works a little harder, concentrates a little more, plans a little more carefully, knows the job a little better, refines his or her skills with greater care and is ready to make the extra effort.

People who succeed in business are people who love what they do. If there’s one dominant characteristic of leaders in any field, it’s their enthusiasm. Their eyes light up when they talk about their work and their enthusiasm in contagious.

To create success in any field you have to believe in what you’re doing, because if you’re excited about it and see it not as a job but as an opportunity or an adventure, you’ll almost certainly be successful. On the other hand, if you’re bored with your work or indifferent to it you’ll almost certainly fall short of your goals.

It’s difficult to be enthusiastic about your work if it doesn’t challenge and excite you. So, if your job is a drag and seems like just a burdensome responsibility, you should think long and hard about getting out of it. Start giving some serious thought to what success means to you and where it will take you. Look closely at the men and women who have reached the top of your field, the people who hold the positions you would like to have, and who make the money you would like to make. Then ask yourself: Will those achievements satisfy me? Would I enjoy a life like theirs?

While persistence, excitement, and enthusiasm are important elements to creating success, knowledge is the most important element in creating success. You must know your field. The people who move ahead in the world of business, who have the edge over their piers, are the experts in their field. They know what the realities are, what the potential is, and where the problems lie.

Your goal must be to learn everything you can about the field that you’re in. Seek out men and women who are leaders in your field. Read everything you can that pertains to your field. Listen to audio programs and regularly attend educational seminars that pertain to your field.

Set a goal to become not just an expert in your field, but to become the expert in your field. The world is full of self-proclaimed experts, people who don’t know what they’re talking about, but nonetheless fill the air with their opinions. The way to rise above them is know your field inside and out.

As you create your success you’re going to make mistakes, every successful person makes them. You’ve been given a world full of wonderful opportunities and it is up to you to take advantage of them. Success can be created only by a total commitment to achieving your goal, but it is the realization and the willingness to make the commitment that creates success.

Do you remember back in the early days of the internet where various “Electronic Bulletin Boards” required you to upload so many files in proportion to the number of downloads you grabbed? File contributions were not only necessary, but were required. In fact, if you didn’t adhere to this policy, you may have been barred from downloading altogether. Everyone was so excited about connecting with other computers and these early Bulletin Boards with their 300 and 1200 baud modems, a far cry from today’s technology just 15-20 years later.

Unlike these Bulletin Boards, our society seems to foster an attitude of taking rather than giving. Most people are looking out for what will give them the most immediate gratification and reward, and aren’t generally interested in the welfare of others. Instead of the give and take philosophy of the early internet days, it’s more of a take-take-take mentality today. A “what’s in it for me” attitude dominates.

Giving is much more than simply a biblical concept. There is a feeling of great satisfaction and fulfillment earned each and every time we do something for or financially contribute to someone else or a cause greater than ourselves. There is no escaping the fact that we are designed that way. Such action is virtually guaranteed for our betterment. Giving, when done in the right spirit, is actually an investment in ourselves, in our future, that will cause us to reap far more than that which we sow. It represents a promise from almighty God Himself. It doesn’t get any bigger than that!

Not only is there the promise of a greater reward for our generosity, but there is the priceless reward of utter satisfaction, joy and fulfillment that fills our heart as a result of giving. Doing a good deed for someone else, especially when done in anonymity, where there is no opportunity for material reward, will make you feel good about yourself and your place in the world. This intangible reward is far greater than any fleeting monetary payment. This mindset of joyful giving is essential for our success.

What does success mean to you? Is it the end result or goal that you aspire to attain? Is success a new address in a better part of town, membership in an elite club or surpassing the Jones’? Is success tangible or intangible? Is your previous definition of success enough or does it leave you wanting more? Whatever success means to you, it is probably much more about the journey than any particular achievement. Try adding cheerful giving to your success formula. You’ll be astonished where it will take you.

Knowing exactly what it is that you want is critical. Having a detailed plan for its achievement is absolutely necessary. Taking consistent and persistent action, while constantly monitoring your progress and altering your strategy accordingly, will surely help you in your journey. Giving, while often not grabbing the spotlight, will definitely contribute to the satisfaction that you seek and make a difference in the life of someone else. Giving is a strong component of success. You will surely get back more than you ever gave away.

What a wonderful word, and concept.

People have been striving for it all their life, and many achieving Success, and others are not so fortunate. It seems to elude them, and their life. Many have been pursuing Success for years, and others start towards it and seem to find it almost immediately. It is a concept that wars have been fought over. Success to one man was the capture and domination of another. And it has been that way for eons.

The meaning of Success comes in many forms, and many definitions. It depends on what you are searching for in life, and searching for in business. Athletes may have one definition of Success, and a stay at home mom may have another. A musician may see Success as a number one hit, and a Doctor may see Success as a surgery that went well. It really depends on the perspective of life you have. Perspectives on Success are as numerous as the stars.

But we need to start narrowing down an understanding of Success:

There is a difference between Accomplishment, Success, and True Success.

Lets’ explore this briefly.

Accomplishment is where you have engaged in the task or action that you attempted, and have obtained the desired results. It is a based on what was expected, and what results were done. This is a daily happening in the world and marketplace. People accomplish things all day long, but really achieve no Success in those actions.

Success is something different.

Success to most people is when you have an ongoing string of accomplshments that when put together, add up to a major obtainment in life known as Success. The addition of all the accomplishments in a person’s career or life can be viewed as Success in their life and business.

Success then is an ongoing realization and obtainment of worthy desired results, concerning actions, life, business, wealth, or a worthy ideal.

But there is even a higher level of Success.

There is a more powerful level of High Achievement.

That is why we call the Path to Success “Success to Success.” It is Biblical that we all move from Glory to Glory, and we all must move from one level of Success to another.

It is called “True Success.”

True Success is simply the realization and obtainment of a worthy ideal or result that your heart is deeply connected to it. It is what births PASSION and your SUCCESS PASSION. It is what people die for. It is why some people explode out of the gates and create Success easily, and others struggle all their life. They are operating on a whole different realm of Success and actions.

It is a Success that is SOAKED with Emotion, Powered by Passion, Driven by Destiny, and Forged with the Fire of the Heart.

There is is no more powerful Success than the Success that the heart is welded to it by the Fire of Passion.

Then we would say that Success and your heart have a definite connection in any type of True Success, and any kind that is long term.

That is why that many athletes and artists have long careers. Their heart is attached to their Success. That is why entrepreneurs many times have long careers. They are operating in their Passion and True Success Power. Many business people today have experienced True Success in their life on an ongoing basis.

Have you?

People accomplish things everyday. They accomplish results and more. People Succeed everyday in the marketplace and on the athletic field, as well as the professional field. The home field with raising successful children is one of the greatest True Success passions there is.

But few obtain True Success.

Why?

True Success has to be Passion driven, with a heart OnFIRE. True Success is birthed from a Dream that cannot be denied. It is driven by a hunger that cannot be stopped. It is driven by a focus that is unrelenting. It is driven by actions that will not be contained. And it is driven by a Force that knows no failure.

What is Success?

That is up to you. But it is not just accomplishment. It is beyond that.

The steady realization of a moral and worthy ideal is Success to most folks.

The steady realization of a dream and an ideal that is driven by the heart and Passion that will not, cannot, and will never be denied is Success to a few folks.

Those few folks not only know the meaning of Success, but also the experience of a Deeper and Higher level of Success.

They are driven by Success, not just pursuing it.

And within that little difference is the meaning and power between Success and True Success.

1. Dream!

Your dreams set the stage for your accomplishments. That’s why it is so important to dream big! At the point of allowing yourself to dream, do not allow any limits to your thoughts. Simply dream. Write down your dreams and review them. Consciously think about how you would feel when each of your dreams becomes reality. Your brain does not make a determination between dreams and reality so it believes all that it stores. Believe that your dreams will come true. See them in your mind as reality! Be expectant. Anticipate success.

2. Establish your desired goals. Write them down.

This is where you go to work on your dreams. You cannot hit a target that you cannot see. In the same manner, you will find it difficult to achieve a goal that you haven’t identified and written down. Your brain immediately goes to work, sifting through its cumulative records and all your memories, to construct a strategy for achieving those goals. Review these written goals frequently, especially before sleeping and immediately upon rising in the morning. Encourage yourself to stay focused upon the goals you select. In the absence of your written goals, your brain will go to work on something of its own choosing, perhaps even a plan inspired from a television show. Remember, your mind does not discriminate between fact and fantasy.

3. Layout your plan (in writing) to achieve your goals.

Identify, in detail, the steps necessary to achieve each of your goals. Be certain to include anticipated obstacles and your intentions for dealing with each of them. Lay out a timetable listing each step and each obstacle relative to your successful achievement of your goal.

4. Take massive action. Be persistent. Never quit.

Now that you have identified what it will take and what stands in your way towards achieving your goals, identify the action steps necessary. Be very specific in determining the actions necessary for each stage and obstacle. Write everything down. Now it is time to get busy. The best plans imaginable are impotent without action, lots of action. Do not ever consider quitting as an option. Be persistent. Adopt an attitude that you will not allow yourself to be denied.

5. Pay particular attention to what is working and what is not.

“I can’t do much about the wind, but I can adjust my sails” is an old saying that proves especially useful here. Take action. Work smart and hard. Notice what is working for you? In the same manner, what is not? It makes little sense to keep pursuing a line of action that is of little value or becomes counter productive. Be smart. Keep alert.

6. Make necessary adjustments to your plan and strategy. Go back to step 4.

Make necessary adjustments to your action strategy on a continuous basis. Always be paying attention to your plan and your relative position on your timeline. Your plan is an effective strategy towards achieving your goals and your dreams only to the extent that you have designed it to work for you. As you make alterations, take massive action again and monitor all aspects of your plan continuously.

7. When your goal is achieved, be thankful. Then bathe in the warmth of your success. Take time to enjoy the wonderful culmination of your plan.

Paying attention to this process will enable you to know precisely when you have achieved your goal! Demonstrate an attitude of gratitude. Be thankful for your abilities, your persistence and those who have been of help to you. Enjoy your success. Enjoy the feelings that fill your mind. Remember them. Allow this euphoria to motivate you for your next achievement.

8. Set new goals and begin the process again.

Now that you have tasted success, start the whole process over again with another goal or dream, this time with even more positive expectancy than the first.

This simple, eight-step strategy has been proven again and again over time by thousands of people from all walks of life and circumstances. There is no mention of the word “if” anywhere in this strategy, only “when.” Adopt this simple yet powerful strategy and make it your own. It will produce the results you have only dreamed of thus far.

Different people define success differently. Success, for some, means being at the top. For some, it means the journey itself and being able to overcome all the obstacles as they travel up. Some even define success in terms of the amount of money they already have. But how ever you may want to define success, the fact remains that success is getting what you really want in life.

Bad attitude breeds failure, rather than success, and drives an individual’s behavior. It is attributed to ignorance, and as such demands attitude adjustment or modification. While most people foolishly and arrogantly think that they are smart, little do they realize that they are making mockery and at the same time belittling themselves through bad attitude and behavior. Bad attitude drives individuals away from their own fellow individuals.

About 90 percent of an individual’s life depends on attitude. Individuals have control of their attitude, and the only thing they can change or modify is that attitude. Most individuals believe that by temporarily changing positions that they can acquire what they want when they want it. It is a matter of economics, and it is all about making choices. Those strategies can only pave a temporary way, given the circumstances, give a temporary relieve, and end up in a dead end road. They are short-sighted strategies, and therefore are always doomed for failure, but might just be okay for individuals, who settle for less. Individuals cannot hide their bad attitude nor can they function with bad behavior. Most individuals assume that they can get away by burning bridges behind them, after they have crossed those same bridges. Pursuing a goal with bad intentions in mind will always come back to haunt the individuals with bad intentions in the long run.

Good attitude involves learning simple curtsies on how to act and behave. Good attitude can land an individual to a dream job, lead to promotion, wage raises, create great contacts, which will propel an individual to success. An example of exhibiting a good and positive attitude will be; seeing someone’s achievement, believing that it is real, congratulating that individual, embracing the achievement for what it is worth and not envying the individual, being happy for the individual’s achievement, and then requesting for help on how we can be helped to achieve success from there. Most of the time, if this approach is employed, we end up getting informed on the positive things that lead to success, and how we can succeed in any venture we embark on.

Individuals lose the chance of a life time when they turn away from success due to their bad attitude and bad behavior. Bad attitude sometimes lead to misinterpretation of intentions, actions, and/or destruction of an individual. It is not suppose to be that way. Most of the time, attitude is learned and embraced from the formation of an individual, through an individual’s environment. Individuals are bred by parents, who teach them the difference between right and wrong, and when they are out of their parents’ sight or environment, they make friends and learn through their association with good and/or bad friends. When parents fail to monitor their children’s behavior, there is a tendency that the children may go astray. Bad attitude embraced at a younger age is sometimes difficult to change, and that drives bad behavior.
